|I was looking through the archives regarding the WCS stem, and I saw this post:
Rusty Coggs "anyone recommend a 110mm stem that actually measures 110mm?" 8/14/03 6:13am
It basically says that his 120 WCS is really a 130 (his Profile also)... he also describes measuring correctly. What the heck? Any truth to this? I'm replacing my current Deda stem that measures 130 C-C. What length WCS do I get?

|I have a 100 and a 110mm. Both measure within 2-3mm of the stated length if you place a scale on top and measure from the center of the steerer to the center of the bars. When you consider that you lose about 2mm due to the 11 degree angle from the horizontal, the horizontal length is about as exact as you could get.
Threadless stems are measured a bit differently than quill stem that were almost all 73 degree, and produced a horizontal orientation of the extension. You can lay a scale on top just about any quill stem and it will measure the stated length c-c. Threadless stems are measured parallel to the extension, but (generally) on the side along a line that intersects the center of the bars. This difference in measurement technique can make threadless stems a few millimeters longer than the stated length, if you measure by the old method of laying a scale along the top of the stem.

|I was the one who posted that earler thread-I re-measured my 110 WCS-it comes to 115.5mm. My 100mm WCS comes to 101.5mm. A 120mm WCS I measured in the shop came out to 125mm. When I showed the empoloyee, he told me "this can't be right, here-let me measure it" then said "well, I guess you were right, this is 125mm. That doesn't seem right". Go figure!|

|If you compare the new method of measuring the length along the side, to the old method of measuring along the top, it indicates that threadless stem will be 2-5mm longer than the stated length, if measured by the old method.|
|Thanks Guys - I'll get the 130 (nm)||JFR|
