Frame Question S-Works or OCLV?(15 posts)

Frame Question S-Works or OCLV?Tail Wind
Aug 19, 2003 8:33 AM
I've got a 97 Lemond OCLV, and I'm looking at buying a new frame... either a 5500 OCLV or a Specialized S-Works... what are you thoughts? (I work at bike shop part-time, and we carry Specialized, Trek, Lemond, Klien road bikes, so price on these frames are very good... so I haven't considerd others)

thanks for any help.

Probally get a better deal on the S-Works.
I hear they ride nice too!
Hard to beat the OCLV.
Trek does not hand out the deals to bike shop employees like the big S.

Yeah, then the slap you with taxes and other BS fees... It's not worth the hassel to get the "pro deal" through Trek... S gives us 15% below cost (I think) and free shipping, no taxes... either way, I'm going to get a good deal... (just my experinces from other shop employes taking advantage of the discounts)

I do get a heck of a deal through S... and I don't have access to a built bike in my size so I can't ride on prior to purchase... I'm also a big guy, 6'2" and 230lbs... not realy a sprinter, climber although I can...

ride both (sprinter or not?)andy02

I would ride both and see first which fit the best. Then what kind of rider are you and what kind of roads do you ride on. I have a OCLV but I ride on bad roads and am not a sprinter. The sprinter on our team also rides a OCLV but says carbon is not as stiff as a top of the line Alu alloy (he has riden just about everything; C40, looks, Kestrals etc). Personally I won't ride anything but carbon anymore. I feel better at the end of a ride/race with carbon.

I'd check out the price on the ti Lemond. Or maybe the Klein. All things being equal, I'd prefer a US-built frame. But if the price is right on the Specialized...

Based on my ride at the Specialized dealer event, I'd say to get the Specialized Roubaix frame. It is lighter, laterally stiffer, and torsionally stiffer than the S-Works Tarmac or E5 frames as well as the OCLV and Giant OCR. To top it off, it was a very nice ride. Still, if it were ME, I'd find a way to swing a Heron! :-)

Just got off the phone with the guys at the shop... next years E5 S-Works will be $300 cheaper (dealer cost) than this years E5 S-Works....

Oh, and the only frame avalible in my size 58 03 model... Mario World Champ frame... I think it's a little more than fred...

someone posted here a while ago that Cipo's frame was built by Ventana...
re: Frame Question S-Works or OCLV?yeah right

yup, that's my lead, but that's only for the D-V team bikes.

The Ventana built bikes were in the Festina era, and cippo, although requesting 9 of the custom built, sub 2 pound frames, never rode them.

Cippo has all his frames built by a guy in Italy. Although specialized will tell you different.
It's obvious that they aren't E5'sfracisco

Cipo's frames are all 'standard geometry' versus the Specialized E5 compact geometry. Look at any picture and you will find the King of the Last Kilometer only riding the standard geometry.

Standard or Compact Geo??Tail Wind

The 97 Lemond OCLV that I currently ride, is that Standard or compact geo? Oh boy... I didn't catch this until this afternoon... and I'm about to order this silly frame... so is this frame just an E5 with a replica paint job or is it this Standard geo that he rides?? I'm so lost... there's two left, for ordering, and I need to make my mind up now...
