First Road Bike Help??NeophyteRoadie

I am searching for my first road bike purchase and I am looking for some feedback on what to look for. I am a big guy (5'10 250lbs) and am leanind toward a steel frame. I am not sure if Tiagra will do or 105 is worth it for me right now. I am looking to spend no more than 1K and I have a couple of bikes in mind. I really like the KHS Flite 500 and the Specialized Elite Cr-Mo 27. If you have any suggestions on other bikes that you have experience with I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your tips..

Steel is a good purchase for a first road bike. 105 is more high end recreational riding and tiagra is below that.. so it depends on how serious you are about the riding. For 1k you could get a really good bike is you look at some used ones. You could get a pretty good new bike for that money but the components might not be as good. It is hard to re-sell bikes, that is why the used route lends to some good deals. You are probably looking for somewhere between the 55-57cm range in size. Good Luck!

Used is the way to go! (if you can find one). I got lucky, picked up a used (3 years old) Lemond Bunos Aires from a local shop in NYC, I got to ride it and talk to the shop guy about fit and stuff. It is a reynolds 853 steel frame, with dura-ace crank and hubs with Ultegra shifters derailurs and brakes. The gut who owned it before me used to race it, cosmetically it has some scratches and nicks, never mistaken for new but I didnt care about that. The bike was well maintained by the guys at that shop (they were affiliated with the guys racing team) - I got lucky, the bike fit I bought it for $750, the deals are there if you do your homeowrk and look hard enough.

Oh, I'm not timy either, 5'8 - 200 lbs, already lost 10 lbs, down to 190 now. I am built pretty solidly (or so I think) so even if I get nice and lean I'll still be about 175 or so, so steel was my choice for now. Besides some of the roads here are very suspect.

I am a big guy at 6'2 275lbs and I ride a Jamis NOVA it is a steel frame and under 1K. If you shop around you can get a leftover at a very good price. It is full Tiagra. The Nova is a Cross bike and is a little more sturdy.

With this being your first road bike, I highly recommend that you find a good LBS.

Being able to test ride, get fitted, and bounce questions off of wrenches could make all of the difference as to whether or not you'll end up liking riding...
