Road & Mtn shoe stiffness (Sidi)lemmy999

I have read the pros and cons on this list of having MTB or Road shoes. Road shoe people say the road shoe soles are stiffer and MTB shoe people claim the soles are the same but the MTB shoes have lugs added on to them. I called Sidi (actually Veltec...the US distributor) and asked them if the soles were the same. He said he thought they were the same but then he finally said he would go ask someone that would definitely know. He came back and said that the road shoe soles are definitely much stiffer than the MTB shoes.

Comparing my Dominator 2 shoes from ~1998-1999 to my wifes Shimano road shoes, there is no contest. Her sole is MUCH stiffer. But I was at an LBS this weekend and was looking at some cheaper Sidi shoes (maybe the Rampa) and the sole did feel stiffer like a road shoe. Are the newer Dominator 4 shoes more like a road sole than the Dominator 2 was?
If it is a carbon sole, it will be just as stiff.MR_GRUMPY

Carbon soles start out stiff, and stay stiff after a few years.

No, current Sidi mountain bike shoes use a different sole than the road model. And the MTN model is not as stiff as the road model.
