Eddy Merckx is as big as a house. Check out the double chin.

he knows, started riding again last year (was even much heavier last year), and is still working on it. I've heard that even this heavy you'd still have a lot of difficulty to ride him out of your wheel...
Any idea how much extra weight he's carrying?Fez

We all don't bat an eye when we see ex-professional football or basketball players gain enormous amounts of weight.

But given that Eddy was arguably the greatest cyclist of all time, its hard seeing him that large.

Has he gone totally sedentary? Or has he still been working out but adopted Jan Ullrich style eating habits?

I asked a collegue of mine if the cycling drug scandals had hurt Eddy's reputation as a national hero. She replied "No, but getting fat hurt Eddy's reputation." There's not the social acceptance of obesity over there that there is here.

And I bet he still kicks the crap out of me and the rest of the guys in my group rides....

getting old is no excuse to get fat (nm)ColnagoFE

To whom does he owe an excuse exactly? (nm)djg

The man may be fat, but his last name is still Merckx!russw19

And he accomplished more in his first week as a pro than most of us will accomplish in a lifetime on the bike.

Who am I to judge... maybe after 15 years of suffering the man wants to sit back and enjoy some bunt cake. Can't fault him for that. He earned a lot of money racing bikes.. and now if he spends it on food, who am I to pass judgement on a living legend? Hell, I like a good cheeseburger now and again...
