Cleat Shims?(2 posts)

Cleat Shims?ISA11

My new Shimano R-600 pedals and cleats are making a terrible grinding noise. I had the same problem with the Look pedals. I believe the noise is generated by my foot putting more pressure on the outside of the cleat than the inside. When I tilt my foot angle in, the noise seems to stop. Because I put more presure on the outside of the cleat, the inside lifts up and grinds. Would pedal/cleat shims fix this problem? In addition, would the shims increase the power transfer? I have been thinking about converting over to the Speedplays but I am afraid the same noise and problems might occur. All comments are welcomed. Thanks, RSG

The hard part is determining how much shimming will be adequate. Alpine ski shops should have binding shims which are easy to cut and shape, and are available in 1/2 degree increments. I don't need to shim my cycling shoes, but my ski boots are planed to allow for a flat running ski.
