Carbon or alloy steerer on carbon fork?(2 posts)

Carbon or alloy steerer on carbon fork?ol

Just in the process of buying a carbon fork, but I am stumped on whether I should go for a carbon steerer or alloy? Weight is not a big issue with me, and the frame that the fork is going in is 51 cm centre to centre. So the steerer will be cut down to size anyway. I had a look HSC3 fork before and it developed a crack at the top of the carbon steerer so I am more prone to an alloy steerer this time.
What are your opinions?

What caused the crack, the fact it was a CF steerer or operator error. My Look CF steerers have no cracks.
