|What exactly are the physical symptoms of overtraining? How quickly can one 'crash' once the body gets into this state?

|Not too long ago I felt the victim of 'overtraining'.
Doing a sudden jump in mileage for an extended time caused a need for rest. I felt physically better after several days, but mentally burned out and rather lethargic for a week or more.
I did short, low intensity rides after taking a week of near total rest. After about three weeks of low intensity and building back up gradually, I felt much better, stronger and ready to go.
Don't underestimate the power of rest. It's the recovery that makes us stronger.
I don't know all the particulars medically, but that's my two cents...
