How might '99 Ultegra groupo compare to...CaliforniaDreaming

I'm considering a used bike with full Ultegra. Bike and group are claimed to have <500mi. The picutres I've seen seem to support this. My question is how might a '99 Ultegra group differ from a '02 or '03 Ultegra group?

Basically the only upgrade is in the levers, Bottom bracket and crank. Octalink and hollow crank vs. square spindle.

I might be wrong and others please correct me.

The 99 had hollow cranks and splined spindle. There have been some minor upgrades in levers to address a rattle problem I think,

They may have addressed the problem but they didn't fix it. The noise is dampened considerably with your hands on the horns.

I have extensively ridden on 99 Ultegra double and a 2003 Ultegra double. For a double, I think all the parts are the same except the chain (hg92 vs. hg93) and the Ultegra double shifters.

I have had no problem with either of the shifters, but the newer one looks better (subjective) and appears to shift crisper. I can't say one performs better than the other.

Neither one rattles, but I have heard the older one tends to rattle.
Thanks All. This is what I was looking for. nm.CaliforniaDreaming

I've got an Ultegra group that originally came on a 1999 bike. I have been very pleased with its performance, and have put about 6000 miles on the group with no problems. The shifters occassionally rattle on rough pavement but that's no big deal. The chain rubs the large ring while in small ring and using last 3 gears, but this is a problem that many folks have reported with Ultegra.

You have a slight chainline problem with your frame. When in your 39, you should only get minor noise in your 13 and major noise in your 12.
