How to clean bar tape?Tahoe Gator

Recently put on some new bar tape and within a couple of weeks it's already pretty black on the top just behind the hoods (where your hands are most of the time). Is there a method to cleaning that will get the black off without damaing the tape?

I've used diluted simple green and a sponge to scrub mine down and it worked pretty well on the synthetic cork tape.

I also tryed dish soap, but you have to wash it off really well otherwise it gets slippery when wet.

You think simple dirt is a problem, try duct tape residue. Goof Off (sp?) was the only thing that worked on that. Any multi-purpose cleaner should clean the tape but why? Isn't dirty tape a red badge of courage?

make a mushy paste...will slightly fade colored bar tape (but doesn't everyone use white? ;)
