Team Performance - Renewal TIme - Not So Sure this Time...Fred the Cross Poser

Hey folks -

Its that time of year again - time to ante up the $20 or so to renew my team performance membership. But, have you noticed that they no longer seem to stock what you need anymore? Or, if they have it, it costs significantly more?

Don't get me wrong, I like Performance - they have given me excellent service.

I am building up one of those new Bianchi Ibex full suspension frames (What MTB did you settle on, Doug?) and no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to buy anything for it there. Instead, for example, I got the Fork (Skareb Super) from Supergo, seatpost (Thomson) from Lickton Bike, the tires (Hutchinson Scorpions) and derailleurs (XT top pull bottom swing) from Nashbar, and the disc brakes and cables (avid mechanicals) from Jenson. Either Performance did not have the items or they were priced significantly higher (in some cases 50% or more).

So, what happened to Performance? I used to buy all my stuff from them. Now, it seems they are busy turning themselves into a clothing store with generic in-house component brands only. Any guesses as to their marketing strategy?

I was once a Team Performance member. If I remember correctly, you got 10% off your order, right? So if you spend more than $200 in the next year you come out ahead. That's the easy way to look at it. I know, they upgrade shipping and give some exclusive offers on...junk.

When I was a member, their catalog always had some ultra-trick new stuff on the first few pages. Whenever I called to order one of those items, it was never in stock. At one point, I just went down the page asking for all the items. They had none of it. I thought it was rediculous that they would put new items in the catalog that they knew they would not have in stock. It was as if they were waiting to see how much interest the customers showed before stocking the item.

It was a total waste of my time. Since then I've explored the internet for other retailers and no longer pay any attention to Performance. As you've found, there is better selection and prices to be found elsewhere.
Try to Determine How Much You'll Spend There. . .MisJG

I know that is tough to do when they don't have stock for the items you want, but it's the only logical way to determine if it's worth the $20. In my case, I knew I was going to buy a pair of sunglasses (Rudy Project Equinox SX) that were going to be over $200 anyway (prescription insert), so I figured I would get the membership, cover the $20 on one purchase and anything else I bought this year would be gravy. You can always delay your membership purchase until you know you're going to buy something costly. There is no benefit to renewing when your's expires and no penalty for letting it lapse. It's $20 no matter what.

and the discounts/upgrades to the other "shops" that Performance owns. Now THAT would make it worth the $20!
They don't advertise it as they used to, but they will pricebill

match. They also will take back almost anything for almost any reason at all.
I try to buy stuff from the smaller local shops, too, but Performance definitely has a place in my life.

It seems most of the time you can find a 20% off coupon in a magazine. I have never been a member but it seems like a good deal if you get most of your stuff there. I have had good luck with Jenson too. I do like Perfomance shorts though. I have a few pair and they are a great deal for the money.

Seems I am always able to find things I want for less somewhere and then use the little box(and I mean little) on the bottom of the web order. Give the web address of the items you want price matched. Two day delivery, ten percent bonus, and price match. With 3 cyclists mountain and road in this house Performance works for me.
