Whats your average speed?(10 posts)

Whats your average speed?Pewe

I ride in flat surroundings. My average speed is about 27-30 km/h (sorry, dont know what that is in mph) and at that pace I feel comfortably and not out of breath. Is this terribly slow? What is your average?

km/hr X .62 = MPH. I am same as you but on a combination of "hillier" and flat surroundings in NY. Rides avg 60-70 miles on weekends; shorter during week because unfortunately I have to still go to work.
Avg. speed is not a good indicator...biknben

...unless you ride the exact same route to test yourself. Trying to use avg. to compare different riders and terrain is useless.

FWIW: I use a flat 50-mile route to gauge my fitness. It has 1,000 feet of climbing overall but it's really just false flats, small rollers, and overpasses. The fastest avg. I've achieved was 21.4 mph (34.4 kph) but I'm usually just around 20 MPH.

You are avg.ing 16.5 to 18.5 mph. You don't indicate the distance so it's hard to gauge the effort. The longer the distance, the slower the avg. (typically). Most of us would be satisfied to do a century at that pace. If that were the avg. for a 20-mile ride, I'd say there is room for improvment but it's not slow.

Let me stress again, avg. is not a good measure when comparing to other riders. Different terrain, riders, and equipment will dramatically alter the average speed. Just use avg. to compare your own efforts over the same route.
There are a few riders that can go 30mph for 3 milesMR_GRUMPY

Spanky and all of his Gang can go that fast.
if I start at 30 I can hold for 3miles or close to itandy02

It is a lot easier to hold at 30 mph but to go from a dead stop an avg 30 for 3miles no way I can do it at this point.

30-32 km/hr at a heartbeat of 130-138
37-39 km/hr at a heartbeat of 160-168
(168 is my 4 mmo turnpoint)
(on straight roads without a lot of stoppoints)
I used to worry about this stuff. Please, do yourself a favorbill

and don't. It doesn't matter. It really and truly doesn't. You want to guage your fitness, I realize, and your ability, but the harm of it is worse than any benefit in knowing how you stack up. If you ride by yourself, you can sort of get into this comfortable zone and ride one speed. If you ride with others, you can become motivated and, even discounting the effects of drafting, ride another, if you don't get psyched out about their "average speed." And then you get into this whole thing of what your average speed is, and even when you don't feel like going that fast you start thinking that you ought to, or, even when your training would benefit by shorter distances faster (intervals) you get obsessed with average speed, and then you start doing intervals but don't allow yourself recovery because of the "average speed," and, and, and, just don't.

Rode a century last weekend and wanted to see if I could maintain 20+ mph for the whole thing without any drafting.
