Rear mount bike carriers + Carbon frame?(4 posts)

Rear mount bike carriers + Carbon frame?hppy4u

I am currently in the market for a bike carrier and cost was an issue so I have narrowed down my search to a rear mount (ie Saris Bones?). My question for anybody who has had any experience with these type of racks and their use with carbon frames is are they compatible? Will I risk damaging the frame tubes? If it helps any, the bike in question is a Fondriest P4 carbon.

Additionally, are the rear mount racks stable enough for highway travel?

That's about it. Thanks to any and all responses.

I have the Saris Bones and it works fine with my carbon bike. The bike shop did suggest however that I put something soft - like a hand towel - around the frame at the straps to keep the frame from potentially rubbing, and I have followed that advice. As for the highway - trips from NYC to Vermont and back on the Interstate and no damage to report.
It will be fine...biknben

The parts of the rack that contact the frame are padded. The worst you may see is some scuffing of the paint finish.

If your rack is properly attched to you car and the bike is properly attached to that you should have no issues. If the bike is just swinging in the breeze it would be a good idea to use some straps or bungie to reduce excessive movement of the bike.

The horror stories of bike falling off cars is always due to user error. Take an extra moment to make sure the bike and rack are secure before each trip.
Thank you. I will purchase the rack based on your experiences. nmhppy4u
