I have just bought a road bike and I am looking for pedals and shoes. I have always loved my sidi dominator shoes for mtn biking, but I have them set up for egg beaters and I really don't want egg beaters for the road. I will probably go with SPD or SPD-R pedals. If a shoe doesn't say it has a carbon fiber sole, does that mean that it isn't? I only see the carbon reinfoced soles mentioned on the shoes that are about $160 and up. Also, I can't decide on getting road or mtb shoes. If I get Sidi shoes, I definitely want the mtb so that I won't need an adapter. I know the advantages of an offroad shoe is that the cleats are protected while walking. Are there any disadvantages?

After taking a poll last week, and searching out dozens of threads on this topic, I decided upon a Shimano M221 CF sole shoe with Speedplay Frogs. I've gone on a couple long rides and haven't noticed any flex in the sole or any hot spots on my feet (apparently the two biggest concerns with mtb shoes). I was also able to walk around at a lunch stop in a nice state park without waddling like I broke my tailbone or something.

I have been looking at the 221 shoes also. Did you get a good deal (if so, where)?

$170. I guess MSRP is $169.99, so I paid over retail by a penny.

I did see the 221's at this store for $145 a few days after I'd bought mine. You might want to give them a call and see if they can ship some to you:
