I got a big box from UPS today and wanted to share it with you all. I had it sent back to Waterford to replace a seat stay and the included a free paint job. This is what i got.. Yippee. I will be rebuilding it with Ultagra/open pro/ ritchey WCS components.

I don't really know what or how it happened. I bought the bike off ebay in april for 420.00. I gave it a one over and it looked good to me as far as I can recall.
I did America's Most Beutiful Bike around Lake Tahoe and noticed that there was a crack where the seatstay meets the lug to the seatpost when I cleaned the bike afterward.
Prior to this ride I switched to a carbon fiber seatpost. One shop told me that I should never have put that seatpost on since the carbon has a tendacy to give. This would in turn make the lug bend more than "normal" which could have caused the crack get worse. I have noticed that the seat stays are fillet brazed to the lug. Maybe this is a week link on the bike since this is where the crack was.
In any case whether or not the crack was there before or after I got it the folks at Waterford have been a pleasure to deal with. They fixed the bike and basically gave me a free paint job. I would highly reccommend them to anyone who is looking for a steel bike.
did Waterford fix your frame for free?tarwheel

It would be very unusual for a bike manufacturer to repair a bike bought used for no cost. Most will honor warranty claims only for the original owner.
did Waterford fix your frame for free?yeah right

I'm sure it wasn't free. When I sent my Waterford in for a new dropout, they gave me a sweet deal on the package price, so it came out that it's kinda like getting a free paint job...now if I could just get the paint to stay on the frame...
