8-speed chain on a 9-speed ring???mekkon

Hey,
I know that the inverse is not acceptable, but is there any problem running an 8-speed chain on a ring made for 9-speed? I've got a free 53t chainring I want to swap up to, but it's from a 9-speed bike and I'm running 8-speed(on this particular bike)...
Thanks!

I've run 8 speed with 9 speed rings and had no problems with excess wear or shifting.

I've been doing it on my mountain bikes for years. I picked up a bunch of XTR 8 speed gear on sale when Shimano went to 9 speed and put it on newer bikes that came with 9 spd. The gears and chain are the same as on a roadbike and I haven't had any problems. My mountain bikes see much more severe abuse than my roadbike also. In other words, go for it.
