|So what bikes/products are American made?...||BrianNYC|

|I was looking at my 2002 361KG yesterday (not riding b/c of the rain) and there is a sticker on it that states "Designed in France". I figured it was made in France, but who knows now. So, what bikes and bike products are actually "Made in America," (or Canada, the kinder and gentler America to our north)?
****I am not asking this question to start a discourse on ethnocentricity, but rather the provenance (sp?) of products that I have spent, and will in the near future spend, a fair amount of money on*******

|All of my recent LOOKs say "Designed in France". I know the 381,386,KX, and 486 are/were made in France. I'm not sure if the 361 was. My KG241 was made in Taiwan. Just this month, LOOK has moved it's production from France to Tunesia(sp?)so no LOOK's will be made in France.|

|if a frame is weilded here with 853 tubes from England
where is it made?
if a bike is assembled here with parts from Taiwan and Japan
where is it made?
if a frame is built in china; flown to america - painted and decaled here and then built up with a Reynolds Ouzo fork, and an Ultegra group, and velomax wheels
where is it made?
Aug 6, 2003 7:28 AM
|1) it's made in the US, because when it left England it was only tubing not a frame.
2) again made in the US, because prior to being built-up it wasn't a bike yet.
3) made in china, because that's where the completed frame left when it was shipped to the US.

|Who - where - which items actually Made in USA:
Thomson - Macon GA - all products
White Industries - SoCal all products
Phil Wood - NoCal - all products
Sun Rims - Ohio - my Venus rims were US made
Reynolds Forks - California - don't know
Wheelsmith Spokes/Nipples - Montana - probably all, not sure
As far as frames, Trek (OCLV & higher end Al), Cannondale, Merlin, Litespeeds (except Al), Waterford/Gunnar, Aegis, Kestel (except Talon), Independent Fab, Calfee, and Serotta come to mind.
Also not so sure about Cane Creek. At least some of their headsets are made by a Taiwanese company called TH Industries. Specifically which items of theirs are use made?

|there are two definitions of 'made in the usa' that I can think of
1 - the government definition (98% USA content)
some in congress have been trying to get this reduced to
70% or 60% -- but there is too much pressure to leave it at 98%
2 - the logical definition -- 50% or more USA content
on either basis; I can not think of any production road bike that meets these tests (due to the cost of the Shimano or Campy)
either way; it doesnt change the way the bike rides

|my definition of "made" in the usa has always been a frame that was designed and welded in the us. when I was a shop monkey that was a selling point for cannondales-theyre all hand made in bedford, penn.|
|I agree with that definition of "made." nm||BrianNYC|
