My day at the NYC cycling champs in pictures:

The story begins with the Giant PR department calling me for an interview about the new TCR100 I won on the Cyclingnews.com fantasy game.

Much to my (pleasant) surprise, this leads to an invite to spend a day at the races in the Giant tent near the NYCCC start/finish on Water & Wall St.

The tent was well stocked with cold drinks and some very tasty items. Here are some of the choice tidbits.

Unfortunately, this one wasn't intended for me: I'm going to have to go hungry 'till Giant gets around to delivering mine...

Oh yeah, by the way, there was a bike race going on too.
Here's the bunch about 50 yards off the line:

The move that mattered started out about 20 strong. As was to be expected, Saturn, Prime Alliance, & the (almost-home-town) Navigators were well represented in the break.

This shot of PA on the front is what the better part of the race looked like in the lead group.

Here are about 12.5 of the 20 guys who made the race (you try fitting more in the frame).

It's a bird, it's a train, it's ...
Good god, look at the size of this guy punching an Amtrack-sized hole in the wind at the head of the race!

Nothstein just couldn't wait for the line to make things happen.

By the way, did I mention that Once showed up to race?

Tres amigos, trying to make a go of it.
Azevedo, Cruz & Nothstein attacked the break when their 60 second plus lead dropped to less than 30 seconds in the last third of the race.

For a while it looked like this was the move.
Enough about my bike, let's talk about _me_ ...BergMann

All right, so these guys would drop me even on the climbs in Central Park. I'd like to see them try & block my jump shot though ...
Was it something I said?BergMann

Maybe it was the rain that came pouring down the second they crossed the line, but I could swear these guys were in a better mood before I brought up this year's tour (note to self, only ask riders about races they _won_).

Galdeano, Acevedo, Noval, and some dude who spoke _really_ bad Spanish.

So Nothstein and the Navs took the day (as the folks in the Navigators tent next door made amply clear with all their post-race gloating), it was still a pretty cool day at the races.
Oh, you just love to make me turn green with envy don't you?! nmnoveread

Not exactly your typical Criterium gearing there. Odd that they put it in a 39x25 - or is that a 27??
not a team bikeBergMann

You're looking at one of 5 TCR100s (6 if you count mine, I guess) that mere mortals in North America will get to ride.

The Once tent featured a full-on fetish gallery of team bikes ridden over the last 5 or 6 years of the tour, and this new TCR100 was the latest installment.

Great post! Thanks for sharing! So, how does the new bike ride??
A couple little drops of water came between me & my test ride...BergMann

Since I don't have my bike yet, the Giant PR folks had promised me a test ride on one of the Once team bikes.

Unfortunately a torrential downpour cut loose the second the race ended, and, to be perfectly honest, riding around on slippery NYC manhole covers and cobbles in my street shoes on those little record ergo pedals didn't really sound a whole lot more attractive than the subsequent hour's ride home on an air conditioned train in drenched street clothes, so I let it go.

Oh well, I'll know soon enough.

any word on what the Once boys thought of US style criterium racing?
What I _should_ have asked...BergMann
Aug 4, 2003 1:40 PM
Instead of broaching the painful topic of the Tour, what I _should_ have asked is how Azevedo felt about his 3 man attempt with Tony Cruz and Nothstein.

20-20 hindsight, but it would have been interesting to know if he was just out flying the Once colors at the head of the race, or was actually thinking of using those guys as a springboard for a solo attempt.
