Sustained Energy...mjpwooo
Jul 31, 2003 7:19 AM
Currently, I use a combo of HammerGel + Carbo Pro for my long rides, but am researching if I should switch to Sustained Energy.

With the CP + HG, I have had very good results, but I'm just searching around.

Any reviews out there?

Thanks!

at do(u)g sloan's recommendation, i used SE for a successful 300k from hell. used HG at irregular intervals to ward off any weak feelings, and a few ziploc snack bags of freetos for salt and some texture. i was on the bike 13h 24m (it was windy), no bonk or stomach problems.

after the 300k i decided to try gatorade and fig newtons for the longer brevets. worked well, cheaper too.

my previous regimen was clif bars & power gels with gatorade. on long rides, the clif bars would irritate my mouth (gums). SE was the perfect solution, though fig newtons turned out to be pretty easy to chew, too.

I've used it for about 2 1/2 years now. I can't use the SE full strength - it seems to "speed up" my digestive tract.
I use one scoop & 4 tablespoons of Hammer Gel per bottle.
For electrolytes, I use Potassium tablets & Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc tablets dissolved in with it. All available from WalMart rather cheeply.

in combination with Hammer Gel. I use about 2.5 scoops/bottle (150 pounds) and go through a bottle in just over an hour. I'm very happy with the results.

I just finished a 155 mile mountain ride on SE and HG, and I was totally unfit for the ride. The stuff just plain works. You do need to find the concentration that works for you, though, under the circumstances. Too much of any carb while riding will slow fluid absorption, and give you gas and the runs.

Also, Steve Born, an ultra rider and employee of Hammer Nutrition/ECaps, is pretty good about answering questions you might have about the products.

it does taste like crap but works. I usually dilute it to 1/2 of recommend and add a few drops of HG.

Sounds silly, but really true for me. First time I tried it I almost puked. After trying everything else and finding nothing that worked, I went back to it and never looked back. I don't even notice the taste now. Flavored Hammergel is recommended by many to help, though.

But don't leave it in your bottle too long. Then it tastes like sour crap. Also, make it right before you use it. Don't make it the night before and put it in the fridge--it won't keep.

The long chain carbo molecules break down over time. Also, much better cold than after sitting in a bottle for a couple of hours in 105 degree heat, as I recently found out. Adding ice helps.

Anyone tried Perpetuem? (another HN product)PseuZQ

Went looking for Sustained Energy tonight but didn't want a big ol' tub so I picked some Perpetuem instead. I like SE -- the first time I tried it was on my first double earlier this year (yeah, dumb, I know) and I found that I felt better, gut-wise, using SE and Hammergel than I ordinarily did during training rides (using Accelerade and Clif Bars.)

Haven't tried the Perpetuem yet. Will give it a go over the weekend. Fingers crossed....
