Changing Ultegra double to Ultegra Triple?(6 posts)

Changing Ultegra double to Ultegra Triple?coifmo

Looking at a nice price on a NOS '02 Lemond Buenos Aires for The Girl, who would like a triple instead of a double.

Shop says no problem.

How hard (or time consuming) is the change-out -- does the BB stay the same? The shift lever? Front deraileur?

Thanks...

bb, cranks, front derailleur change. i think (not sure) the shifters are universal double/triple.

however, IME most shop/stock bikes/kits come with a 12-25 cassette. you could easily change the cassette to -32 or -34 with a mtb rear (xt = ultegra) and get almost the same low gearing as with triple/12-27.

30/27 = 29.6 gear inches
39/34 = 30.5

something to ponder.

Yes, but the big gaps between the gears would be annoying.
doesn't bother me a bit (nm)JS Haiku Shop

I swapped my Ultegra triple for a double. I traded up for DA, so after I got the new parts (crank, crank arms, BB, fr der.) and had them installed, I think it cost about $300. Maybe you just want to move into the next price range rather than modify this one.

Also, once the wrench adjusts the shifters for a dbl, actual shifting and feel of the STI will be a little bit sloppy.

PS - don't use DA BB they are extremely delicate

They'll need to change the crank-set, bottom bracket, both derailleurs, and adjust the chain length. Ultegra shifters are the same, double or triple. Consider switching the cassette to a 12-27 instead of the 12-25, depending on the hills you plan to ride.
