I heard Tyler was using something like this to reduce road shock because of his pain.

... About 3/8 inch of stiff foam that takes all the buzz out of the bars and gives a great grip, even for my arthritic right hand. I've ridden centuries with these grips without gloves.

I use a single wrap of cushioned bar tape on the roadbike, but I spend a fair amount of time in the hoods, and the rubber hoods would probably raise a blister if I tried to ride a century with no gloves. I ride short distances in comfort without gloves, but longer distances I use my gel-cushion gloves.
