Is there any difference in setting up a bike with the stem such that it has positive vs. negative rise, assuming with spacers you can get the bar to the same position (I know the bar in the right position is what should matter most)?

My thought is that the only difference is that with positive rise you can use less spacers and chop off some of the steer tube. Which makes me think this is a marginally better setup. However I seem to see most bikes set up the other way, more spacers with negative rise.

depends on how you want it to look.Stem police prefer the negative rise. Fewer spacers might mean less steerer flex with CF steerers.

I think negative just looks a little better and allows you to keep more of the steerer tube which is always a good thing. Allows for you to change the setup for someone else if you sell it or whatever other reason you might need to change it.
