OK, OK, some nice words about the Evil Empire.OldEdScott

Couple of weeks ago, when my second Ultegra shifter went south in less than a year, I referred to them as 'crap' and wondered aloud if Shimano would, as part of their warranty, just let me pay the difference between Ultegra/Dura-Ace to get Dura-Ace. Had no intention of trying a third Ultegra. I wasn't optimistic they'd go for it.

I must say, Shimano went above and beyond. Very pleasant customer service rep said: "Hell, if you'll pay to ship the old shifters back, we'll just give you a set of Dura-Ace, no charge. I'll put 'em in the mail today. Sorry you've had problems."

Shifters arrived in short order, complete with a set of shifter and brake cables and two complimentary pair of Dura-Ace Coolmax socks.

Ultegra shifters may still be crap, but Shimano deserves public credit for apparently recognizing the problem and doing more than I asked for to keep me as a customer and someone who says nice things about them. I have to say they succeeded.
so you contacted the rep directly?JS Haiku Shop

LBS service manager put me on the phone to explain my woes. He was like "Never heard of them doing THAT before."

Actually, with new Dura-Ace coming out this fall, they're probably looking at a warehouse full of obsolete 9 speed levers. Look for them at SuperGo this fall...
I figured the same thing. Still,OldEdScott

I was offering to pay the difference. Rarely it is that a capitalist turns down money, eh TJ?
You made the offer to the worker, his boss is outraged (nm)TJeanloz

They are already starting planned obsolescence for 9 speed...Fez

In about 2 years, some 9-speed DA riders are going to need warranty replacement shifters and aren't going to be able to get them.

I wonder if that same Shimano rep will offer them 10 speed levers and socks at No Charge?

That was more tongue-in-cheek, but even if they did, I'm sure a few more parts will be necessary to make that 9 speed DA into a functioning 10 speed.
maybe you have bad luck...tommy t

I remember reading your rant a couple of weeks ago. Seems like everything worked out and you seem somewhat satisfied.

As for you saying "Ultegra shifters may still be crap" in your last paragraph... I seriously doubt that. Many of us on this board including myself haven't had any problems whatsoever with the Ultegra shifters.
No, you're right, Ultegra shifters areOldEdScott

fine when they work, but it seems like there are (or have been) more than a few Ultegra 'lemons' out there. I happened to get two of them (and I'm gentle on equipment). If you got a good one, you got a great shifter, no question.

The rest of the Ultegra group is first-rate, BTW.
