Would you buy used shorts?PaulCL

Why would I ask this?? A friend of mine got some really nice Assos bibs (2 pair) for Christmas a year + ago. He wore them (he says) a half dozen times each. He has since gained a lot of weight and can't wear them anymore. He's offering them to me at $60 for the pair just to get rid of them. They are my size and I have never had a pair of Assos bibs.

Slightly used jersies, I'm OK with. But my initial reaction to a pair of bibs is yuck! But then again, they do look like new, I can always throw them in the washer before wearing them. I'm conflicted. Am I being overly picky?? Is this too good of a deal to pass up?? Or is it really gross to wear someone else's shorts??

Anybody here would, if ...Humma Hah

What do you think the shorts Armstrong crashed in on Monday would go for on e-bay?

But Monday's crash, and the ensuing charge up the mountains leaving the competition gasping, is gonna be the stuff of legends for years.

Give me a break! Yeah, it sounds yucky, but wash them once or twice and they should be fine. If you don't trust your washing machine to get your clothes clean, consider that you are sitting in your own filthy clothes right now.

People will only freak out if you tell them you are wearing used shorts, so don't tell anyone. I don't know too many people who really want to know anyway. I definitely don't know anyone who would ask.
I've bought 2 pairs of used Volers on EbayDave Hickey

Wash them a couple of times and they are some of my most comfortable shorts. I'd never buy used underwear at Goodwill but bike shorts don't bother me. I don't know why that makes sense to me!
Perhaps because you can afford new underwear! nmdzrider

I would not but that is a good deal. The descision is your of course. If you take them, I'd recommend you keep such information to yourself.

How many times have those new shorts at the LBS been tried on? What's the difference?
I think the statistics are in one's favorterry b

20 or 30 pairs of shorts on the rack - probability that someone has had their greasy butt in one of them is pretty low.

however, that's why I buy mine via mail order - sealed bag, brown paper wrapper.

My wife loves shopping at resale shops... She's gotten some amazing deals on real nice clothing but I won't let her buy me underwear or bathing suits. Maybe because cycling shorts cost so much, I'll wear them........

there's just something about all those gas and bodily fluid atoms imbedded in the chamois, driven in by 6 or more sweaty hours in the saddle, time and time again.....

glad we had this chat after lunch.

OK, from this day forward, I'll only buy womans shorts :-) NMDave Hickey

When trying on shorts at the LBS, I keep my panties on.

Many stores have rules regarding lingerie and bathing suits for women. The must keep an article of clothing between them and the merchandise.

They seem to get especially uptight about it when I'm trying on lingerie. :-)
Do you go commando when "trying on" shorts at the LBS?Kristin
Jul 23, 2003 1:32 PM
If so, please let me know which LBS's you shop at. ;-) Personally, I only buy shorts that are in sealed bags; but that's just me. Wearing used underwear isn't toxic--usually--so its a personal choice.

If I have a couple pairs of really expensive Italian silk boxers (say $100 a pair) that I've grown bored with, would you take them off my hands? Really comfortable, $60 a pair.

I take Paypal.
Can you say 'Poop Stains'? nmmoo2

"Poop Stains"PaulCL
Jul 23, 2003 11:50 AM
What a pleasant picture. I looked at the shorts and the chamois. No obvious poop stains present. Though, the gritters could be REALLY tiny....

On the one hand...well...the poop stain point of view is very valid. On the other...$60 for two pair of Assos bibs, a good washing, keeping my mouth shut, the bibs in the LBS comment....hmmm....

If I buy them, I'll never admit it on this board or anywhere else. Luckily, my friend, with all of his weight gain has quit cycling so he'll never tell either. He got into the sport becuase he thought it was "cool" then quickly tired of it when he realized there was work involved.
you won't have to admit it, we already know (nm)terry b

did he or didn't he???....I'll never tell.

Seriously, my gut is to skip it. Though I won't go spend $150 for one pair, much less $300 for two, of Assos bibs - I can afford new ones if I really wanted them.

I asked my wife the same question, she said to buy them and wash them a couple of times. Not what I expected.

Would you charge a FRIEND for a used clothing item that didn't even fit you???

I'm constantly amazed. Doesn't anyone just give stuff away anymore? This is not the first time I've heard of "selling" to a friend that which one no longer needs and I think it is really lame. Sorry, no offense to your buddy.

As for used shorts, I would PROBABLY say "no thanks"

Quite true.KG 361
Jul 23, 2003 2:23 PM
I might sell them on e-bay, but I'd give them to a friend. (I've been the recipient of 1 nice pr of gloves from a FRIEND.) If you washed them, they would surely be OK to wear. However, the thought of wearing something that had been "up close and personal" with someone else would ruin the charm for me, if you know what I mean!

Yes. Just wash them, then spray with Lysol or some other germ killer and wash again. That should take care of any bacteria.
Jul 23, 2003 1:04 PM
I don't know that I would, but if I look at it logically, why not? If I wash them well, what is wrong with them? I know most of us guys are thinking, "I don't want my boys where another set of boys have been." But think about going out to dinner, we use forks and spoons and knives that have been in hundreds of other mouths. Or staying in a hotel we use towels that have dried dozens of private areas or sleep on sheets that have had untold number of bodily fluids on them.

Kind of makes shorts that only one friend has worn seem downright sanitary.

few strips of duct tape and yer ready to go ; ) (nm)loki_1

I've sold a few pair of PI shorts on ebay. I wore them twice, hated them, and sold on the net. Had several bidders each each time. Your riding partner might be wearing my old shorts. Who knows?

Jul 23, 2003 1:21 PM
that shouldn't stop you. It's my own pickiness that won't allow me to do it. Most of us use towels and linens in hotels after they have been laundered, and they have been used by
i who knows doing who knows what...
no reason why used shorts can't be used after giving them a good scrub. It's more a matter of what your own fastidiousness and pocketbook allow you to do.
Board concensus seems to beKristin

We all think its gross and wouldn't do it personally, but we think you should go for it--though you should negotiate the price. We promise we won't judge you poorly. :-)
Thanks for the non-judgemental attitude and a final decisionPaulCL
Jul 23, 2003 7:19 PM
Several good points brought up:
1. If I outgrew the bibs, I would give them to a friend
2. Since he is a friend, I won't negotiate. The price is good
3. Since they appear clean, a couple of good washings should do OK
4. Yes, I use hotel towels,sheets,etc...but not bedspreads (since they don't get washed)
5. True, the idea of my 'boys' being where some other guys' 'boys' were is a major negative

As I wrote way above...I think I'll skip the bibs. Wearing someone elses' shorts kinda gives me the creeps. Besides, just the mere chance of someone I'm riding with finding out and all the s**t I'd get isn't worth the price. My luck, I'd meet Kristin next week and she'd notice my fancy Assos bibs...and post it on this board. ;) If I want some Assos bibs, I'll treat myself to a nice, new, poop-stain-less, no gritters, in the bag, from the store pair.

P.S. As of this point, this thread has had over one thousand views!! On a thread about "poop stains" !!!

... we tend to think of ourselves as "clean"... which we often confuse with "hygenic"... but the truth is, humans are far filthier than many of us would care to admit (especially, a generation raised on deorderants and now, antibiotic soap)... so, while there's a certain bit of social stigma attached, get over it (anyone who's needed the service of a second hand store... as perched their arse in many a used clothing item... including undies).

Indeed, as long as they've been washed, any skidmarks and such that might be left... are essentially biologically inert material... far less of a threat to your general health than the unwiped poop around your own chute... which is staining your drawers as we speak.

Besides, in general, who's gonna know???

Be the bike.

While a little quesey sounding, I'd do it an keep my mouth shut.

Similar kind of thing. While cooking at home, if any of the fooods drop on the floor or gets dirty in any way, I toss it and begin anew. While camping if the food falls in the dirt, bugs land on it, ash flies in it....I cook it and eat it, and comment about how good it all tastes.

$30.00 Assos bibs is the same as good camp food, enjoy them.

maybe if they belonged to Paola Pezzo nmDougSloan
