Chain not narrow enough???(5 posts)

Chain not narrow enough???mlbd

I have ultegra triple 9-speed on one of my bikes. I bought a new chain yesterday and all my shop had in stock was a Dura Ace chain so i took it. It's a narrow, 9-speed chain. I put it on, cleaned it, lubed it and tuned the shifting but the chain is jumping and skipping all over the place. I used a formula to size the chain, but i don't think that's the problem. It looks like the chain is getting stuck between the cogs, especially when in the smallest 3 or 4 gears (it doesn't happen when it's in the bigger cogs). I compared the width to a few spare links from my last chain (which worked fine for 2500+ miles) and the new Dura Ace chain is wider!! Can it be mislabeled? Is DA actually different from ultegra?

Thanks a lot.

Are you sure it's 9 speed? The narrow DA chain is 8 speed. The 9 speed says something like "ultra narrow".
The Chain itself says "Narrow"mlbd

The chain itself is engraved with the word "narrow" not "ultra narrow." But the package says ultra narrow, 9 speed. If the chain says "narrow" only does that mean it's 8 speed? The shop may have goofed. The package was a little beat up so there may have been a switch at some point. Unfortunately, the shop is going out of business so everything is kind chaotic there.
It is an 8-speed chain...CN-7401...Thanks (nm)mlbd

My 9-speed Dura-Ace chain says "Dura-Ace CN-7701". If the box was unsealed, it could be an 8 speed that you have. I would call the shop. Let us know what happens
