Is Arnold S. a long time cycling fan or an opportunistic...eschelon

bandwagon jumper looking for publicity for his movie that coincidentally just came out? Anyone care to shed light on this? I find it hard to believe that Arnold has ever or been a cycling fan...especially of Lance Armstrong, yet I have never seen him around or mentioned in the last 4 Tours.

Did you see the way Arnold spooked his competitors in "Pumping Iron?" The guy's an original, like Lance Armstrong, and Lance's other buddies, Robin Williams and Lyle Lovett. It's not surprising a world class weightlifter would find a world class cyclist a worthy acquaintance.

Why not? He was a pro athlete and he's euro, so he probably respects cycling more than 99% of americans. Even with the 'roids, you still have to work incredibly hard to produce those kind of results. You wouldn't classify Le Tour as easy even if you had access to every performance enhancing product on the market.

Also, he was Mr. Universe, that means he was in charge of the entire universe.

It's not possible to maintain the body he's maintained all these years without fitness being a priority in your life.

he is European and they tend to like cycling a lot more than Americans (nascar comes to mind), he grew up in Austria and I do belive he had a bike as a teenager to ride to the gym. With all the mtns in Austria I am sure he admires the riders, he is also a sportsman in his own right so he admires and understands the dedication of these guys. So I think it is a bit of both, he is using his fame to get to see the tour, meet the riders and publicize his film, heck I would.
Let's also not forget....CaliforniaDreaming

that his eyes may focused on Gov. Davis' job in California. Just being cynical.

But, I agree with you. He's probably a sportsman with an appreciation for intense competition.
c'mon - his build just screams 'cyclist'!SmogRider

I think it's more PR for his new political career in CA. PR is PR...

personally I think it sucks that he showed at the TdF.

Do you want to keep cycling as a secret society in the US?

I like Arnold. He is a champion bodybuilder, but that is just one part of this self-made man's history. He is a real estate heavyweight and has been since the 80's. He's a good Republican (like Lance secretly is). He is a former head of the President's Council on Physical Fitness. He is an accomplished actor (for what that's worth these days) and movie producer. His ability to get in shape and stay in shape at his age is an inspiration to all of us old guys. OK, he married a Kennedy, but he obviously doesn't let her eat, so we'll overlook that indiscretion.

Who would you rather ride with Arnold or Robin Williams? (How's that for a political acid test?)
He'll never be governor because...eschelon

he used steroids! I totally admire this guy...but facts are facts, he was a Juicer...the best one at that. His Hollywood friends in the media who have alot at stake with his movies and other ancillary products may have silenced his juicin' days past...but the fact is, when you are starting to embark on the political road, the number of people who are willing to forego niceties for ammunition increase exponentially.

For the life of me, I don't understand how there are so many folks out there that actually think Arnold was a "clean" bodybuilder...but surprise surprise, there are plenty! But when you figure that there are people out there who actually believe that a fish swallowed a man and the man lived to tell about it after being in the fish's belly for a few days, I guess you can make people believe in just about anything these days!
well, we ARE talking Cali, aren't we? nm.Steve_0

he pretty much put bodybuilding on the american map with the movie pumping iron. and it's not like he rested on his laurels after that. he may not be some people's idea of an athlete, but i'm guessing he is way stronger than most people his age and has provided much inspiration and advice to up and coming bodybuilders over the years.
Sorry :( I'd ride with Robin over Arnie in a max. heartbeat! NMSmogRider
