Lemond Tourmalet vs Cannondale R600catfan

I am an avid mtb'er looking to get into road riding to increase my perfomance. I have been shopping around and can purchase either a Lemond Tourmalet or Cannondale R600 for around $1000. My question is which of these bikes would be the best bet and are there other bikes I should be looking at in this price range.

I appreciate your input.

You can't go wrong with a Cannondale - but if you do buy the R600, upgrade out of the Grecal wheelset. They kill the performance of the bike.

I'll second the wheelset upgrade. Not only do they suck like... well something that sucks a lot, but if you EVER knock them out of true, they are almost impossible to true back in to normal. Just get yourself some Mavic Cosmos and see if the shop will do any trade in on the stock wheelset. Its more than worth it.

tourmalet will typically have longer TT and have a different feel than the Cannondale. I dont have the specs here, but I think this to be the general rule. Not sure we are necessarily comparing apples to apples here... what are the wheelsets/gruppos that come with?

Cannondales and Lemonds feel and fit completely different. I'm not referring to steel versus aluminum, but the fit. I put alot of miles on a Cannondale SR800 and when I started looking for a new bike a couple years ago, checked out the newer Cannondales, as well as the Lemonds. A guy at a LBS told me that the Lemonds fit different and people either loved or hated them. I fit a 54cm Cannodale, however this size felt huge on a Lemond. The LBS recommended that I try a 51cm and it was like finding out that I had been wearing the wrong size shoes for the past 10 years.
I checked out the specs at both websites and the component selection is similar for both bikes. I personally, would pick whichever one fits you the best. I own a Buenos Aires, which has the same frame as the Tourmalet, and love it.

I owned the C600 and steel framed bikes similar to the Lemond. The C600 is a nice, fast bike, but very stiff. The Lemond will have a little more give, i.e. long ride comfort to it. Both are good values, but they have completely different ride qualities to them. Go for the Cannondale if you like short, fast rides or buy the Lemond for long, century type stuff.
