The Fuzz in NYC are on a mission for the fixed/no brakes setonespeed

On my way home from work last night, I got accosted by one of my fixed gear brethren who warned me that the cops are ticketing cyclists with no rear brake. I have only been stopped once and ticketed once in NYC and on 2 other occasions have outrun the police. I will just have to keep my eyes open for them and turn the other way if they head towards me.
What is the law in NYC. ??????....nmMR_GRUMPY

Clearly states "working brakes required".
Are strong legs "working brakes" on a fixed gear? (nm)TJeanloz

VA guideline: must be able to skid the wheel ...Humma Hah

Proving your one brake is adequate in Virginia means demonstrating you can lay rubber like a kid with a coasterbrake who doesn't buy his own tires.

This is a dubious measure for my purposes: I HAVE managed to skid the rear wheel of a brakeless fixie (I didn't intend to, and it scared the cr^! out of me, but I forgot the silly thing wouldn't coast).
a bell..........anyone have one ?? nmafrican

Pretty handy, too. On my 140-mile ride I should have had the bell ... would have probably saved 300 calories yelling "on your left".
I am not sure. I guess it is against it to not have a back. nmonespeed

and if you are, it's in your saddle bag.....amazing how our public officals operate....don't do diddly-s#$t to Big Business, but they have plenty of time to harrass the natives for petty BS....and they have the nerve to ask you to donate for their bullet proof vest campaign.....
