Well after much debating and test riding I decided on the Fuji touring model. After speaking to a few friends who have that model, I was convinced. All three of them have well over 10,000 miles on theirs and have never had any problems. I put about 100 miles on it in the first two days of owning it, so hopefully I have 9,900 more trouble free miles.

The Fuji Touring is one of the few production bikes that isn't a racer wannabe. The longer stays and touring geometry will give you a nice stable ride. The gearing will take you anywhere, and the 36 spoke wheels should be durable and reliable. If people bought the best bike for the way they ride, this would be one on the most popular bikes on the road. And after you put 10,000 miles on your Fuji the cost will be about $.08/mile.

I have never actually seen this bike before so I was checking out their web site. It should be a nice bike, but it kind of looks like a mountain bike with drop bars. It is interesting to compare it to a real touring bike from the 80's and then the "long wheebase" does not look so long ;)

Looking at bike wheelbases around a size 54 frame:

modern racing 98cm
Fuji Touring 1024cm
80's Touring 1045
