GVH Bikes?(8 posts)

GVH Bikes?STI

I just tried to go to GVH Bikes. There is a message about "due to medical reasons, the place is indefintely gone". Does anyone have an idea of what's going on. I actually was interested in the Cinelli Starship frame. I hope everything is OK.

"due to medical reasons, the place is indefintely gone" hardly equates to, "Due to medical reasons, GVH Bikes will be closed indefinitely." Gary routinely takes 2-4 week vacations; "gone" <> "closed indefinitely". "Closed" is the term he uses on his website for "not open", and does not mean "shut down" or "out of business"--at least not right now.

"Does anyone have an idea of what's going on."

I'd guess there are medical problems in his family and he's attending his top priority. Little more info is required than is written on his site.

Those with kits/frames/builds in progress needn't worry; his mechanic is minding the shop.

Do we know that for sure? Someone on the "other" board said that a few months back Gary was undergoing chemo (had never heard that) and that his wife gave a kind response to a "get well" email, so I guess I surmised that the health problem is his own.

I am worried about him since it doesn't say "closed temporarily" it says "closed indefinitely." Maybe I put too much emphasis on the connotations of the words but I thought it was troubling.

it could be anything. let's not make any assumptions.

the important thing is that he's taking care of his priorities, and his "critical" site business is handled appropriately. my sentiment was and will continue to be good thoughts for Gary and his peeps. more than that is beyond the realm of MMOB (mind my own bidness).

I hope folks make this big a deal about it when I take a few days off. really, what would you guys do without me? :)

You're not allowed to take a day off. I'll dock your pay:-) nmDave Hickey

It is just that "closed indefinitely for health reasons" didn't sound the same as taking a day off.

But I'll be quiet now since my speculation is, admittedly, uninformed speculation.

Maybe I put it poorly, but I just hope everything is going to be OK. It sounds from those who have dealt with him in the past that he is a good business person to have around. I've only heard good things about GVH Bikes. My heart goes out to him and his family.

To dispell the rumors, I have contacted Gary's mechanic and he has given me permission to post the following:

I'm Gary's mechanic, Tom. I'm glad you like the Merckx.
If you would like to dispell the rumors, here's the facts: Gary is in the hospital with pneumonia. He has been there for about a week now and expects to be for another week or so. It is serious for someone in his condition, but he is definitely improving. In the meantime, GVH is open in a limited way. I am taking orders, folks just need to email me with what they are looking at and I will respond by email or phone.
Thanks again, let me know if you have any questions about the bike, I'd be glad to help.
