Hi all:

I am new to this site and in advance I would like to say very nice to meet you all. I am a avid mountain biker who just finished the Brianhead 100. In otherwords, I am not a full-on newbie to cycling. I have never owned a road bike before and have only rode a friend's about 3 times [each time about 65 miles]. I plan on putting some serious miles in on the road bike to bring my endurance and strength up to a new level. Any suggestions? I know test riding is a must but I have no idea what to really look for as far as geometry, model, etc. I live in San Diego, CA if this helps at all. A limiter to what I can buy is that I really am financially challenged. I guess my request is most bang for the buck as well. I really appreciate any input you could give me.
Thanks again,
Sean aka pavementpounder

The question is just so open ended as to be almost impossible to answer. Just as with mt bikes, you'll get the most bang for limited bucks shopping on the used market. For $500, you can find a used bike with decent frame from the late 90s with Shimano 105 or even Ultegra components in steel or aluminum. But to buy used, you need to really have a sense of what you need size-wise. And bikes that are supposedly the same "size" can still fit differently.

How much do you want to spend?

Max is 1K-1.5K but I am looking for alternate ways as well. In otherwords, cheaper. The less I spend on bike stuff the less flak I get from my wife, which I am sure most of you can relate to. Any good links to get a used road bike or is it better to look in the paper, Reader, etc? I would really like to join a riding group and get some experience riding in a pack since alot of my mountain biking friends are a little distance-phobic. I am not saying I am a hardcore rider I just love getting my butt kicked. Heck, I might even entertain thoughts of racing it if I can pick it up quick enough. Still getting used to the nimbleness, style, and finesse of road riding. The reason for my price change is my wife is getting a scholarship from USD and she might be getting a little leftover for me...still not sure yet. Again I am probably being way too broad. Thank you for the rapid responses and the advice so far.

If you can master the fit issue, you can get a LOT of bike for $1k on the used market. For example, I sold an Ultegra-equipped Litespeed with fewer than 5000 miles on it for $1,000 on the rbr classifieds.

I think the classifieds on this site are excellent, but you do need to know enough to buy a bike that fits.

I'll probably catch heck for this but if money is really tight... I'd go to your LBS and test ride some bikes to get a good idea what frame size you need and what mfg you like. Then I'd buy used for that brand and frame size.

Remember, different companies have different frame geometries and they may not measure the frame size the same.

If you buy used, make sure you test ride the same make/model if possible.

I don't think anyone should give you heck about that statement. No different then car shopping.
Now, why can't I get a Colnago with 0 interest for 60 months?Just kidding but would be nice.

Go for used bike with Ultegra (Shimano 600) components since you will put serious hurt on them. You can find out some measurement by using the calculation from www.wrenchscience.com. Hope it help,
