|My girlfriend and I are heading to Hawaii in september for what we hope is a fun although inexpensive vacation (already purchased cheap airline tickets). We plan to camp the majority of our 8 days on Maui. I think it would be a lot of fun to do the whole trip on bikes, although I am unsure about camping opportunities. I know of very few organized campgrounds on the island. We would gladly take primitive beach camping over organized camping, but are unsure of the legality/enforcement of such behavior. We would like the cycling to be very leisurely, with less than 50 miles per day, and possibly a day on day off schedule. Has anyone ever done any touring / camping on Maui? If so, I would greatly appreciate any insight and information. If anyone has been cycling / camping on another of the Hawaiian Islands, and feels that there experience was good enough to warrant the ~$100 inter-island flight, that information would also be appreciated. If you know of any secret camp sites, that you do not wish to divulge to the general public, you can email me at email@example.com
Thanks in advance.
Also, if you know of another forum better suited for this topic, that information would also be appreciated.

|I didn't camp, and can't speak to that, but Maui is pretty road bike friendly in my experience. Of course there is the big one... the ride up Haleakela. But there's a highway that travels the entire southwest side of the island that has a great shoulder and goes all the way from Wailea to up past Kanapali, etc. The road to Hana is supposed to be a great ride, though the limited shoulder would make me careful if I was riding alongside tourists in rental cars.|| |
