Can I replace the pad only or do I have to purchase the whole unit (pad holder)? Any good brake pad replacements besides Shimano?

thanks

I like to replace the rubber inserts with KoolStop inserts, they're softer, get the black ones. I've got close to 10,000 miles on a set of KoolStop pads, replaced my Dura-Ace.

...I bought some stock Ultegra pads, and they just starting lunching on my rims, Kool Stops don't do this, and provide all the stopping power you need.

You can replace the pad only. As everyone above has said, get Kool Stops -- they are far superior to the Shimano pads.
