During our now regular weekly Saturday am ride (left at 7am), which was to be at a "long steady distance" but never is- anyway... I found myself having a bit of vertigo/dizziness and minor leg cramping. I knew I wasn't fully recovered from Thursdays's ride with the same crew, and yesterday it rained... anyway, today's was 60 miles with mid 70s humid weather (which was pleasant as far as I was concerned).

I'm curious how others handle pre-hydration and eating for these early rides (after basically "fasting" all night). I generally prefer liquid calories before a ride so I don't run into digestive issues. I'm never hungry on the bike, but sometimes I get that low blood sugar feeling- or is it that dehydrated feeling?

I posted a similar question in the nutrition group. I have found that a bowl of ceral, banana, glass of milk and possibly a granola bar about 30 minutes before is great. Just take a good supply of fluids and then around the 1-2 hour mark, try a power bar or something.

So far this has helped me very well. I had some rough mountian biking rides back a month or so ago and felt like I was about to die for about 15 minutes. I have since been following this meal and things are great.

Let me know what you find works well.

I am typically not very hungry when I leave for weekend rides that start at same time-7AM. But, one needs to eat. If I force myself to eat, its a bowl of oatmeal or at least a yogurt. If not, I make sure that about 20 miles in to the I start eating meaning banana, power bar, etc.

I'm new to this nutrition stuff, I just go with what I find works. I'm curious though, what is the reason so many eat oatmeal before rides? I would eat oatmeal, if I could only see that it would actually help me.

I'll usually down a big glass of OJ with protien mix in it and possibly a cereal bar or cliff bar, if I have them. I drink as much water as I can stand and MUST have at least 1 cup of joe. I usually don't have any problems when I do this for the sat am hammerfest.
