I am soliciting advice on a bike I am considering buying. It's a 1992 or 1993 Allez, cro-moly frame, all Ultegra components (shifters on the bars, not on the downtube). I am a new rider and want to get a decent road bike w/out laying out over a grand. This bike is being offered to me for about 500.
Any thoughts on the bike or the price for this bike?
THanks in advance.

|if it's the lugged carbon fiber allez epic, i'd pass on it. they have a history of the tubes separating from the lugs as they get older.
there was also an allez version sold set up for triathletes during this time, with steeper angles and tri-bars and such, that i'd also avoid.
if it's one of the steel ones, and still in good shape, it would be a good bike, although i'm not sure if it may be a bit overpriced.
most important thing is to make sure it fits you.

|Any warning signs or inspection that can be done for the CF lugged allez bikes? I got one over the winter, the deal that couldn't be passed up came along. So far I'm really enjoying the bike, fits me great. But with this info, I'm wondering whether I should skip my plan to upgrade this frame and instead save up $$ for another bike. Thanks.|

|i don't know how prevalent it is, or whether it's guaranteed to happen, just a matter of time, but i've heard stories.|

|Those were pretty nice bikes. If it is Ultegra 8-speed STI and really clean and comes with nice pedals and tires, it is probably not a bad deal but if it has obviously been well used and there is a lot wear on it, I would pass at 500 bucks.|| |
