DUI Charge For Kirsten Gum
Kirsten Gum, the local anchorwoman turned Fox NASCAR reporter, has a tentative court date in August following her arrest for driving while impaired the night before the Coca-Cola 600 race. Police said Gum was pulled over in the 1600 block of East Seventh Street, Charlotte, about 1:45 a.m. May 27, 16 hours before the start of the race she helped cover for Fox Sports. Gum, 29, said Monday she could not comment on the case. The arresting officer, R.C. Gormican of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, said in a report that Gum was stopped near Hawthorne Lane after her 1997 Mazda 626 was seen speeding and following an SUV too closely.Gum later failed field sobriety tests and took a breath test that showed her blood alcohol content was 0.11 percent, court documents said. North Carolina's threshold for intoxication is 0.08percent.Gum was released on $1,000 bond later that morning.(That's Racin')(6-7-01)

Best Charlotte's Sexiest Woman:

Kirsten Gum

(See critics' pick for Local Girl Made Bad). Last year's critics' winner in this category has won the, umm, hearts of our male readers. Local Boy or Girl Made Bad:

Kirsten Gum

Last year's critics' pick, and this year's readers' pick as Charlotte's Sexiest Woman, former WCCB-TV anchor Gum promptly had her contract un-renewed by the station, with no explanation. She joined a cable sports program as a NASCAR reporter, and a couple of months later was arrested on a DUI charge. One of our critics sought to give her the benefit of the doubt: "Maybe she doesn't have a drinking problem, just a driving problem."
I don't care, she's still cuter than Liggett (nm)terry b

I knew it! Between that seemingly adult-anchor-presence
and questionable knowledge of bikes is a tigress swinging
by the chandeliere ready to party at a moments notice.

I like her. Yep.
There goes her chancesMel Erickson

I dig her. Don't even think I'm listening to what she's saying. I think Bob Roll should bring it up. "Hey Kirsten, you ever get that DUI situation cleared up?"

I'd love to see her host an E! show in a seriously nothingness thong, drunk and feeling adventurous!

Go into your houses and stand in front of your bathroom mirror. Don't gaze for too long, we wouldn't want you to go blind... Then ask yourself, "Should I really being making fun of Kirsten Gum's looks?" I doubt more than 1% of the RBR populous would find their reflection attractive enough to turn the head of one Kirsten Gumm.
And risk having it crack? nmDCP

Her ups

Are second nature to me now..

Bravo Kristin, you nailed this one right.

I've been watching via tapes supplied the day after by a co-worker. If anything, Bob Roll needs to step up and make that home run touchdown in a 54x11. I actually like the job she is doing and my prediction for the race is she will get a podium interview. OK, at least some leg shaving tips!

Kirsten is much better than the CBS Dark ages with Pierre Salinger as the commentator talking about wine in the Bordeaux region, give that guy a bicycle fer criminy sakes.

Now here is the real question for this forum.

Kirsten Gumm shows up at your local weekend ride decked out in the TDF kit she picked across the pond.
You:

a. Introduce yourself and compliment her work at the TDF

b. Chat with your cycling clique where to drop her sorry ass.

c. Point out the QR lever is on the wrong side on the front wheel

d. Her race number is not pinned correctly, you volunteer to "adjust it"

Yeah, we are all speechless commentators on the side of the road.

She's also doing a dog showgeeker

I don't think she's that great looking (certainly not bad though and I actually kind of liked her mug shot) and she doesn't seem to know a great deal about cycling and it might be a stretch to call her a professional broadcaster, but good lord give the girl a break! I think she is trying her best and it does seem that she has been a bit less hyper lately. Look, you get three weeks of Phil, Paul and Bobke at the greatest cycling event in the world. Just enjoy it! And if you really have to critique her why doesn't everyone wait until the TDF is over. At least give her a chance to grow into the position.
Good point but....northcoast
Jul 11, 2003 4:18 PM
I think she should have rode into that position. Why let her grow into it? She's not very professional and has no cycling experience. Heck we could have found many people on this board with unprofessional broadcasting skills that still know something about cycling. With her we get neither.

I just don't see why she got the job. She should have at least one of the two skills. Not zero and we give her time to learn...why?

Yes I do kind of feel sorry for her, but the fact is she hasn't earned the right to be there.
...guess she will fit right in w/ Ullrich & Simoni, nm.Matt Britter

Jul 11, 2003 7:05 PM
sure, she seems a little zany, and it's a given that she doesn't know too much about the sport. but she brings a sort of enthusiasm and cheer to the broadcast that i find contagious. it's a far better match than the pomposity or gravitas that whatever his name was last year, or varsha the year before brought. it seemed they felt they needed to treat the tour as some kind of solemn holy symbol, and so were all serious and full of flowery language about "the majesty of the tour", and as a result were boring and aggravating as hell. she brings a bit of fun to the race, and isn't that what it's all about?
All of you guys need to get out and ride more! nmpnitefly
