OLN please dump Kirsten Gum. Please don't follow along like every other sports show and put on eye candy. Your program is for cyclists and we want intelligent commentary and the cycling. We don't need a young immature person that knows nothing about the sport. Totally biased...and just regurgitates everything that Phil or Paul or Bob says.

Why ???

Why do the networks continually insist on having "commentators" that know nothing about what they are reporting on?
I really don't mind her that much.seyboro

She doesn't really comment on the race, rather 'prompt' the boys to discuss the aspect du jour. All the while she is not half as pretentious as Ol' Bob Varsha ('member him?!?), pronounces things semi-properly and looks a whole lot better than Bobke. Consider the alternative: You could end up with something like Tom Arnold and his moronic friends on the 'Best damn cycling show-period'.
Cutting out the 'broadcaster' is simply not going to happen. Just skip the Pre-race and enjoy the rest...
Chris Carmichael looks unnerved by her!BigFatSal

She really gives the poor guy a lot of crap and I have a feeling she was told to lighten up on him or he won't be back! He looks like he's gritting his teeth to not smack her! I understand that the network may want to have a "professional" broadcaster to steer the show, but she is so grating and annoying. And it doesn't seem like she has any clue about cycling, which is not to her discredit, but it brings insincerity to the coverage in my opinion. Sure she's nice to look at but she's very annoying.... I wait all year to watch this so I don't want to just opt to not watch it because of the un-commentator! I suppose we'll all survive.

Christ, y'all people are such snobs. Can't you guys just be happy that you get this much coverage? Who gives a f*ck about some silly commentator, you guys already get Phil, Paul, and Bob.

I think gap-smile Bob could handle the load himself. Either way we do have it pretty good concidering that some people are trying to outlaw our sport in this country.
She does what the boys can't...biknben

She is the industry pro. No matter how much you love phil, paul, and bob they are just ex-racers spitting out old stories and clichés.

Kirsten's job is to tie them all together and maintain the flow for a few hours. She doesn't bother me at all. She doesn't do any more than introduce segments and segues (sp?) between commentators. That's all they need her to do and she's doing fine. She's not doing 5-minute monologues like that idiot last year. (who's now doing the running of the bulls)

Why you guys get all bothered by this is strange. Stop complaining and watch the race.

The one I find least appealing is Charmichal. I think I saw too many of his segments on summer sports zone. They were nothing but CTS advertisements. Is he being paid or endorsing the show.
I think she's ok.Leroy

Much better than Patrick. She's just trying hard; it's probably a good gig for her. Cut her some slack - lighten up on her. I agree that Carmichael is a load - the lame link in the presentation. Carmichael almost ruined the segment on 7-11's team time trial mishaps, saved by Bobke the great. I like Sam Posey, too. I say keep Ms. Gum. She's all right.
What industry is she a pro in?Crash

It's certainly not journalism. At least she is enthusiastic and I've gotten to the point where I really don't mind her. If this is what you have to put up with to get the TDF coverage, so be it.
Uh....Broadcasting...biknben

It might only require a communications degree but I doubt that Phil, Paul, and Bob have one.

Broadcasting??? She's not a Pro, she may have graduated with a degree in Broadcasting, but as a Pro-race Cyling Commentator, she's a 'dropout'.....

DUI Charge For Kirsten Gum
Kirsten Gum, the local anchorwoman turned Fox NASCAR reporter, has a tentative court date in August following her arrest for driving while impaired the night before the Coca-Cola 600 race. Police said Gum was pulled over in the 1600 block of East Seventh Street, Charlotte, about 1:45 a.m. May 27, 16 hours before the start of the race she helped cover for Fox Sports. Gum, 29, said Monday she could not comment on the case. The arresting officer, R.C. Gormican of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, said in a report that Gum was stopped near Hawthorne Lane after her 1997 Mazda 626 was seen speeding and following an SUV too closely.Gum later failed field sobriety tests and took a breath test that showed her blood alcohol content was 0.11 percent, court documents said. North Carolina's threshold for intoxication is 0.08percent.Gum was released on $1,000 bond later that morning.(That's Racin')(6-7-01)

Best Charlotte's Sexiest Woman:

Kirsten Gum

(See critics' pick for Local Girl Made Bad). Last year's critics' winner in this category has won the, umm, hearts of our male readers. Local Boy or Girl Made Bad:

Kirsten Gum

Last year's critics' pick, and this year's readers' pick as Charlotte's Sexiest Woman, former WCCB-TV anchor Gum promptly had her contract un-renewed by the station, with no explanation. She joined a cable sports program as a NASCAR reporter, and a couple of months later was arrested on a DUI charge. One of our critics sought to give her the benefit of the doubt: "Maybe she doesn't have a drinking problem, just a driving problem."
Amen! How about Cipo or Vaughters as segment hosts?Daddylonglegs

Kirsten is doing just fine. Let's see her stick with it and sure we will learn to appreciate her freshness. How about a "Day in the life of a Podium Girl"?

Phil always sits with his arms crossed when he is next to her; doesn't look too happy.

It reminded me of the first show, she started to hold Phil's arm and it looks like it made Phil really unconfortable. That might be why he crosses his arms in the shows thereafter.
MS. GUM NEEDS TO WEAR A WET T-SHIRT! @@El Caballito

With the temps rising at the Tour, the only way I can hang with Ms. Gum is seeing her in a wet T. That OLN outfit sucks! A little nip action will go nicely with Roll's commentary. @@

I agree with others that the interaction between Gum and the others appears to be somewhat uncomfortable. She always seems to be touching who is ever sitting next to her and both Phil and Chris seem a bit uneasy with it. On the flip side, I think Bob is enjoying the heck out of it and, I may be somewhat off base, but she really appears to be digging on Bobke.

If any of this helps increase ratings by appealing to a wider audience, I'm all for it. I remember what it was like pre-OLN when my only coverage was in VeloNews and I really don't want to go back.
