So I've read all the posts regarding trainers and rollers. I know that trainers can be better for strength and are good for working on spinning and one-legged drills. I know that rollers are good for learning how to keep a line and keeping a good cadence. Why question is which would be better for having fun in inside while it is too hot to ride. I am getting tired of looking at my bike on its rack, and everytime I go outside to ride in 100+ heat I just loose too much water too fast. I can't have a good ride because I just dehydrate very rapidly. So I want to train indoors so I at least feel like I am getting some use out of my very expensive new bike. So what do you guys like better for this scenerio. Thanks for the help.

The obvious answers are to ride early in the am (if you're laid off) or find a nice forest to keep you in the shade and out of the sun....(we have some nice shaded rides around here....50-60 miles worth :)) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate is the key and there is a product to help with riding in the heat: Twinlab's "Glycerol Fuel" can be consumed 2 hrs. prior to exercise and a few tablespoons added to each water bottle. It's not designed to increase your performance, but to keep you hydrated longer. The label states: "Glycerol Fuel contains 99.7% pure pharmaceutical grade glycerol, a natural body constituent that can help you superhydrate, drawing water into your muscles and body. Reserch shows athletes who use glycerol before exercise perform better than athletes who don't. Plus they stayed cooler and had a lower heart rate." (No added sugars, salt or artificial sweeteners. The temps here are >90°F and the humidity is constantly >75%....this makes for a physical demand on the 'bod just to walk outside, much less ride....(if interested, good health food stores carry it, or you can get it via the internet Sports Nutrition sites)

I like a fluid trainer and the Spinervals tapes. The fluid trainer has the most road like feel. Rollers are great but I found that the intensity level of the fluid trainer is more transferable to the road. Also, I noticed that even with a high fitness level on the rollers, I did not develop the same power output capabilities as I do on the fluid trainer.

Mag trainers I don't like at all. They do not feel natural to me. My opinion. My best fitness gains have been made on the fluid trainer with a combination of 2 of the spinerval tapes in any one session (45 min - 1.5 hours in length). After those workouts, I feel like I do when I ride hard the same length of time on the road.

Some in our group have started packing large squirt guns that have been pre-chilled. We do 25 to 30 miles after work at a slightly slower pace. We're getting pretty accurate,learning a lot about wind/bike position, and having way too much FUN !!
