I am riding on my first organized 50 mile ride in about 6 weeks. I've never ridden more than 20 miles at once. Can anyone recommend how should I work up to 50 miles over the next 6 weeks?
since you have 6 weeks,niteschaos

I would make sure I have at least one good endurance ride a week that I would use to build on. I'd start off adding miles to that ride until it reached the goal. You can already ride 20 miles, right? This weekend or something go and ride 25, then ride 30 next weekend, then 35, 40, 45. 50 miles really isn't that far and once you ride the distance you'll wonder why you didn't earlier. You may wanna bring food with you on your longer rides. Even though I regularly ride 70 miles, I still have to bring a lot of food to last me so I don't run out of energy. I eat 2 pop-tart every 20 miles when I'm doing distance. At 190 pounds I'm not a very effecient engine.

I would say that if you can get your weekly millege up to and maybe slightly over 50 then doing 50 in one day should be cake.

I've read that on any one day that you can ride 3x your average ride, so 50 should be doable for you. As another poster said, over the next 3 weeks, gradually add miles to your longer rides. Make sure to eat, and more importantly, make sure you drink! Preferably a sports drink with electrolytes, such as gatorage or the myriads of others out there. Good luck and have fun!
