OLN's new reporter Kirsten Gum(34 posts)

OLN's new reporter Kirsten Gummoo2

Does anyone know if OLN's new reporter Kirsten Gum is the same Kirsten Gum below:
www.cln.com

If so, it appears that the was voted Charlotte's sexiest woman in 2000. She does appear to be somewhat of a hottie under that dumb OLN vest.
Looks like her.JL
Jul 8, 2003 6:41 AM
Could be her. Hard to tell with that picture, but the face looks the same. She is on the link for doing the TV news, so she probably worked her way "up" to OLN.

Much better than Bill Patrick. Looks like they having him working the Running of the Bulls this week.

Happy riding.

She's hosting some dog chronicles on ESPN: http://espn.go.com/outdoors/general/s/g_tv_desc_sporting_dog_chron.html

agree - have her interview the podium girlsDougSloan
Jul 8, 2003 7:18 AM
With 3 main guys who have actually *ridden* the Tour, and one, Phil, who has commented on it 31 times, I don't see the need to bring in others, no matter how good looking. They don't add anything, but are annoying, with us knowing they are doing nothing but reading from cards and repeating things incessantly like "how about that crash?"

I see she had done lots of similar programs, from NASCAR, to fishing, hunting, and the Mt. Everest thing.

They should have her go interview the podium girls or the local restaurant owners (not intended to be sexist -- I'd say the same thing if an uninformed man were in her place).

Yes, she doesn't add anything but OLN seems....bent_spoke

to be following the typical Network format that requires that you have a "talking head" in addition to the experts. This year's presentation looks a little more polished to me, so maybe they're trying to step up their game to gain wider appeal....

My VCR can fast forward thru commercials...it'd be nice if they had an auto mute feature...
Man is she ANNOYING! Why does OLN hire these people!ColnagoFE
Jul 8, 2003 8:11 AM
Why does OLN always hire this kind of person to act as the intermediary between the people we really want to listen to like Paul/Phil and Bob Roll? Loved how she said "here is the Brit view on the race" when she introduced Paul and Phil last night. And Bob Roll doesn't seem impressed with her one bit. He had to fight to get a word in edgewise while she babbled on about some dumb point after another.
Even my wife hates her...asks me, "why is she talking?"BIG RING

I tend to aggree with you Doug. I watched last night's coverage and was wondering who she was. Enthusiasts such as ourselves are critical of commentary, especially cycling. The team they have seems adequate without her. Perhaps they should have hired a former female racer. There are plenty of them both knowledgeable and attractive. Kirsten may be fine for NASCAR or dogs but a bit lacking for cycling. Take note OLN.

She's certainly nice to look at, but if she keeps saying things like, "I really dig this guy, he is so cool, we need to have him on more," (said before stage 2 when interviewing Chris Carmichael) or something to that effect, I may have to turn the sound down when she's on.
OLN does listen.fracisco
Jul 8, 2003 9:00 AM
During the Louis Vuitton Cup (the lead-up to the America's Cup) that OLN broadcasted, there was enough feedback (sent via email directly to OLN) to tailor the coverage so that it emphasized what the racing sailor audience preferred to see.

It never hurts to ask.

Jul 8, 2003 9:09 AM
but could Kirsten really be Charlotte's sexiest women? She's not bad looking but very average (IMO). Plus she has an annoying voice and doesn't seem to really know a lot about cycling. There had to be at least ONE former female cyclist that was available if they really needed to have a female on the broadcast team.

I know of a few female racers that would be awesome in place of Kristen. They have been racing for about as long as I've been alive. Maybe they didn't want someone like that around because Bob would be hitting on a woman like that instead of paying attention to the race.

Speaking of sexy women though, I'll admit that she would only be above average in most cities, but if she were to step foot onto Ga Tech campus during this summer semester hottie drought she would have a mob of stumbling nerds asking for her digits.

Broadcasting Rule #153T
Jul 8, 2003 9:51 AM
Always have a broadcaster!

I don't see how OLN could possibly turn on an expensive production team behind the camera without having a professional broadcaster in front of the camera. That's what she is, not a bike racer, not an athlete. She's put in years of training, payed her dues, weighed her food (well, maybe not) and retained the best coaches. Phil is a damn good broadcaster, but he's not there in the studio and can't set the pace for Bobke, or whatever expert they trot in to add some content. I certainly would not put Roll in front of a camera by himself, teleprompter or not. He is a great cyclist, and a pretty good actor, but he's no broadcaster.

If they had their pick, they would pick Sherwin or Phil, but the budget would not support an international incident of that magnitude.
Yep - agree with that.270bullet

Phil and Paul appeal to hard corps cyclist, but they bore the h*ll out of non-cyclist. A good show needs balance of experts and straight anchors to link the show content to a broader audience.

Kirsten is doing a great job. Her pacing of Bobke is "spot on". Notice how she rubs her neck when he's going long? A signal for Bobke to wrap it up.

Yes, why couldn't they round up somebody the likes of Jeannie Longo or Leontin Van Morsel (sp?), a woman who actually knows what they are saying, with the experience and clout to back it up. I think they are retired, aren't they? I won't mind hearing from somebody like them in the least.

Anyone here ever watched listened to Eurosport!? The main commentator is Mr David 'Verbal Diarrhoea' Duffield.....and if that wasn't bad enough the ex-pros they have at their disposal are Sean Kelly (my all-time cycling hero)and Stephen Roche neither of which can be understood clearly without subtitles. Sometimes its better to have a less glamorous cycling name that can speak clearly.
Whew, that's a reliefLeroy

Yeah, to most of the people on this board Kirsten Gum is like an annoying gnat buzzing in our ear. But to other people whos life doesn't revolve around a bike (no one I know) Kirsten offers a less intimidating way to find out just what the hell is going on! Sure she can ask really dumb questions but they aren't any dumber than the ones I get from my own co-workers about the tour. I think OLN did the right thing to broaden their audience; they had an average, clueless, overly enthusiastic North American with a pretty face who doesn't know anything about cycling co-anchor the world's largest bike race. Where's the problem? No seriously, I think she is doing a great job and I am glad OLN broke the typical "talking head" mold for commentators to appeal to a wider audience. We cyclists can be a bit elitist sometime...let's give her a break.

Every one needs a straight man. Imagine if she started with LTHR questions from Charmichael. You, me and 5 others would get it; every one else says, huh? We're beyond the basics and we're taking that for granted. Tune in at 8:30 if you can't stand the set-up / answer format of the pre-show. I dislke the travel and culture segment and get a fresh beer when that comes on.

Be really glad that OLN covers this and not like the weekend CBS 1/2 hour recap we used to get a few scant years ago (remember that?)

she just comes across as dumb and rather useless to me and also to my wife who is not all that into cycling. not all that attractive IMO either. i just don't see how she improves the content in any regard.

What the H%$* is she doing on the TdF ????coonass
Jul 8, 2003 5:14 PM
OLN is really screwing up the telecast to have that 'know nothing' female on the air...."Oh, I can't believe that they continue to race after crashing....." What a dingbat!!!
Why do we need Goldie Hawn covering the TdF???? It's a MAN'S race, for MEN, by MEN; why do we need her???? she knows nothing about road racing except to ask Bobke what his prediction is......maybe OLN & Trek are wanting Clairol, Kotex or Tampon to jump into the sponsorship.....if so, I hope they turn the lights 'off' when they leave. (Sorry, I'm not being chauvenistic; I lovvveee women, but this is the biggest screwup ever, all based on being a diverse, politically correct telecast....DUHHHHHHHHHH!!!!)

D*mn coonass, chill baby. Get a dose of KTLA Channel 5 morning news or KTTV Channel 11 morning news. Kirsten's doing a good job. Phil comes across as jerk sometimes addressing his answers to Paul rather than back at Kirsten. Charmichael looked like a complete a$$ on today's show. Kirsten provided some good balance.

Stop biting the hand that feeds you. Maybe OLN will just say screw-it - can't get enough sponsors, can't get the right mix of broadcasters, etc. and pull the plug. We can then go back and watch the 1 hour "highlight" show on Saturday's with John Tess.
she is just way too goofyColnagoFE
Jul 9, 2003 6:44 AM
If she'd just play the striaghtwoman and stop trying to be funny it might work. Her little jibes at Carmichael and others are just annoying. And why should Phil address her...she wouldn't have a decent answer anyway. If anything she is getting more anoying as of stage 3 than less annoying. I loved how Carmichael said he'd be back "if she was nice" after she made some comment that he was salty and flabby or something to that effect based on a jab that Bobke made about Phil.
also the comment about Hamilton was strangeColnagoFE
