|Who's the best all-around rider in the pro peloton today? |
Here are the conditions;
In a race that covers, say 200 K, with a combination of flats, rollers, and 2 Hors category climbs. The race would be run with out any "teams" (in other words, a peloton of riders all out for themselves) and to ensure that old alliances are not taken into account, each rider is zapped with one of those temporary memory erasers (like in Men in Black). The finish wouldn't be a mountain top, but would come about 10 K after one on a flat road. Every rider is "in form" and there are no accidents or mechanicals.
Good question, eh?

Maybe Jacky Durand if he got out to a fast start, but more than likely it would still be won by a climber. Someone who could destroy the competition on the second climb...like Lance or Simoni or Hamilton or Heras. OK, I'd go for the obvious: Lance.

|I also go with Ullrich or Armstrong. Much as I like Paolo Bettini, he can't climb the high Hor category passes, the other mountain goats such as Simoni can't ride the flats without support. Given the scenario painted, Jan or Lance.|

In good form I like Dekker, but I have to go with Lance.
