... for such questions, there are no simple answers...

I'd suggest you read text in heart rate, aerobic and anaerobic training with respect to cycling such as those presented by Edmund R. Burke and Joe Friel (Friel's texts are geared towards competitive cycling but can be adapted if necessary)... there's no one answer... but basically, you're looking for a training regimin to increase your body's ability to both tolerate and remove lactic acid from muscle groups during heavy exertion (essentially aerobic conditioning)... along with possible use of some buffering agents.
