calf muscles don't help you pedal they just hold your foot...maybe you could splint them?? Just kidding take an easy spin and see how you feel

If calf muscles don't help you ride, why do cyclists have carved calf muscles? I have heard the "calf muscles don't" bunk for years and if it's true, then why am I having so much trouble with my calf muscles when I ride? I have been experiencing charley horses in my calves and am at my wits end trying to determine how to stop them! Is it saddle position? (too high?) Cleat position? (too far fore/aft) I've been told is dehydration. Dehydration? I drink so much water and gatorade it's silly. If anyone has the answer, please let me know. I'm going to go move my saddle again. . .
