Anyone have a recommendation for a good entry level SPD shoe for a mountain-biker who is dabbling in the road bike arena for a sprint triathalon?

I've had good luck with Sidi Dynamics. They're fairly light, stiff, and very comfortable. You will need an adapter plate for SPD though.

Why not use the shoes you have? Use the pedals too. If this is a one off triathlon and/or you don't intend to do much road riding use what you got. If you really want a pair of road shoes check out Specialized.com. They often have some really good sales on shoes. I checked but the only road shoes they have on sale are womens. Their 01 Comp shoe is $20! I paid around the same for my current pair of MTB shoes, their second from the top shoe and only one model year old. Very nice shoes, but check to make sure they fit well. Not everyone has good luck with Specialized shoes fitting their feet. Performance has some good buys on AXO and Shimano road shoes (under $40).
