Rides in Ruidoso / Cloudcroft, NMEl Guapo

I'm heading up to Ruidoso, NM in a few weeks. I'm looking for some good rides in the area. I have already decided I will ride to the top of Sierra Blanca to the ski base and from Cloudcroft to the Sunspot Observatory. Any other suggestions?

These are both listed in "Road Biking New Mexico" by Nicole Blouin. (Globe Pequot Press) She also includes the two you just named.

You could do the 41 mile loop on highways 220, 380 and 48. Her cue sheet starts at the Smokey Bear Ranger Station on 48 just north of Ruidoso, head northeast on 220 past Fort Stanton to 380, then left (west) toward Capitan. At Smokey Bear State Historical Park head southwest on 48 to return.

Cloudcroft to Ruidoso. She lists this ride as a one way. High Altitude has a bike shop in both towns. They don't advertise a shuttle service, but apparently you can arrange something with them. It's 42 miles one-way. Options are to do a long out and back with lots of climbing, get the shuttle, or stay overnight in one town before you head back.

Pick up her book if you can, I highly recommend it.

The Cloudcroft to sunspot ride is especially nice. On all the rides mentioned so far beware the cow grates, they're especially thick between Ruidoso and Cloudcroft. They can come up pretty unexpectedly if your not used to the area.
