Ksyrium/Conti Supersonic "blowoff" problem?(4 posts)

Ksyrium/Conti Supersonic "blowoff" problem?vindicator

A friend of mine had his supersonic rear (@125 psi)come off his Ksyrium SSL rim this weekend in a crit, after someone clipped his rear wheel in the final mid-sprint corner (too close to the finish, a la Cipo's crash in the Giro). Luckily, he stayed upright, but a few bikes got in it and there's plenty of bike damage to go around.

Anyway, that triggered my memory that their may have been some issue with supersonics staying on Ksyrium rims, though my recollection was that the problem was limited to initial installation and was only when you tried to get the tires up to THEIR recommended max of 145, not when you stayed within the wheels' recommended max of 125.

A search found a reference by Doug to an "at installation" incident, but no mid-race incidents.

Can anyone enlighten me on this issue? If there IS an issue, is there a good way to ride this tire/wheel combo in a crit or should he pick a different tire? If so, which one?

What likely happened was that your friend's back tire was actually airborne for a second, and when they came back down the force was great enough to actually force the tire off the rim. You can roll a tubular the same way. I've seen this happen in crit corners when someone clips a pedal.

I had Supersonics blow off, but at the rated pressures. They did it right away, too.

Now, I could see them barely hanging on, then blowing off when heated a bit and nudged in the corner. Hard to say.

Also, the pressure gauge could be wrong.

I worked in a shop when those tires came out and I remember quite a few of them blowing off, but I do not remember any wheel in particular. Doug is probably right though, they could have been barely hanging on and then let loose from the impact. I didn't see too many people happy with this tire, and I have not heard (on this board) of too many people happy with this tire, so I would say to try something else.
