does an expander plug and top cap in carbon steerer tighten?jimcav

Thanks to this forum, I found out I needed an expansion plug and top cap so I could put a stem on my ouzo fork with a carbon steerer tube. but it does not get tight like a star fangled nut. is that okay? seems like the stem is the only thing on tight.
Thanks,
Jim

The Reynolds expansion plug has 2 different areas to tighten. One is for compression adjustment. Use a 5mm wrench and tighten to 70 in-lb. This sets pressure on the inner diameter of the steer tube.

Then use a 6mm hex wrench and tighten the top cap to 22 in-lb. to preload the bearings.

The above assumes you are using the Reynolds plug. I just got that from the directions. If you are using something else, follow those directions.

The stem bolts actually hold the stem to the outside of the steerer.

thanks--I did not specifically use a torque wrench, but I did the 5mm expander first, then the cap, but it just kept turning?
will try again

thanks,

You can't do any better than this:

Steps 5-8 are what you need.
