|I recall in 1973 Eddy Merckx was set to win his 5th TDF in a row -- a record I think. Then this guy from Spain on an orange Motobecane surprised everyone. Mostly surprised Merckx I guess.
Anyone think Lance will be in for a surprise? The 5th one seems to be a limit.
We in Austin would love to see him do 5, 6, and even more.

Merckx didn't even ride the Tour in 1973! He stated that he had no interest in equaling Anquetil's record (of five victories) and went to the coast for vacation with his family in July of 1973! Merckx did indeed win 5, but not in a row.

I thought Merckx was in the tour in 1973 -- I thought he rode in 73 and 74

Merckx won the Giro, didn't race the Tour and won the Vuelta in '73. He won it again in '74.

No Eddy in 1973. With a handle like merckx56 who needs my confirmation though.

Some say that Mercx didn't ride TdF in 73 as a gesture
of chivalry, to let others (perhaps he had Ocana in mind)
to get a shot at it. In a different TdF, Ocana crashed
heavily while wearing the Maillot Jaune and had to retire.
Mercx was second in the GC and was awarded the Maillot
Jaune by default the next day, but refused to wear it.
And indeed, Ocana won in 73 so he's definitely no slouch!
