So I'm definitely a newbie, and I was wondering what everyone thought about riding while listening to music? I don't ride in any urban areas, or even suburban areas. It's strictly rural routes for now, but there are still some roads with light traffic on them. So is riding while wearing headphones just an accident waiting to happen? Any thoughts welcome. Thanks.

|It ranks right up there with NOT wearing a helmet, riding in cut-off shorts, riding against traffic, running red lights, etc...
It shows the world you are a free spirit with a devil-may-care attitude, impervious to the peer pressure of serious road bikers who may frown on such actions...
...self-preservation is for suckers!

I listen to my minidisc all the time when I ride. I don't think it's more dangerous to listen to music while riding. It's not as if you can tell the difference between a truck thats gonna pass you and one thats gonna run you over.

"I only have it loud enough to hear, I can hear everything else no problem." That's like saying "I can hear fine with ear plugs in, just not as loud." The few times people have ridden with me, insisting that their music doesn't cause problems, it's clear that their cognitive abilities are impaired. I don't know if it's the masking effect of the music over other sounds, or if it's getting into the music and losing concentratio. I don't care which it is, but I've learned from experience to 1) never let anyone ride with me while they're listening to music and 2) give those folks a wide berth when passing, as they inevitably can't seem to hear my warnings. But I guess that's everyone else, not the people who post here in defense of listening while riding.

As long as you don't listen to Phil Collins you'll be okay. If you're serious about music; check out the Etymotic earphones...

I don't know about where you live, but around where I live you deserve to get run over when you do that. It may also brake the law. Some regions, States, counties, whatever... have rules against driving with Headphones, They can probably prosecute you the same way. My opinion, don't do it, it's irrationally dangerous.

Believe me. I am involved with a lot of music (piano and choral music), and love to go out in the early morning. It's full of wonderful sounds.
Oh and by the way, it's a lot safer than wearing phones too........
