Steel frames with carbon seatpostBacco

I recently bought a carbon seatpost to use with my Lemond Zurich. You aren't suppose to use grease on a carbon seatpost - so I didn't. When I pulled up the seatpost tonight to clamp it into my bicycle stand, I noticed a lot of rusty residue on it. Why can't I use grease or Frame Saver? Does it harm the carbon or will the seatpost slip? Is there a way to prevent rust inside a steel frame that is compatible with a carbon seatpost?
